Одношагового роста эксперимент — эксперимент, в котором периодически определяли концентрацию свободных фаговых частиц, после того как фаг абсорбируется на E. coli и инкубируется. Показано, что в течение некоторого времени концентрация фагов остается постоянной, затем быстро возрастает и выходит на плато, которое и является «одним шагом» на кривой роста. Т. обр. был сделан вывод о том, что после инфицирования имеется латентный период, за которым следует разрыв клетки хозяина и выход потомков фага.
